Partnership with Migros Group 2025
The Federation of Migros Cooperatives (MGB) has been committed to environmental protection together with WWF for over 25 years. Since 2009, this has taken place within the framework of a comprehensive strategic partnership that includes ambitious goals in the most relevant environmental areas.
At the beginning of 2025, Migros published its group-wide sustainability strategy. The existing targets from the partnership are firmly embedded in Migros’ sustainability strategy and are being pursued jointly. In 2025, the focus was particularly on the central group-wide topics of climate and biodiversity.
As part of the group-wide sustainability strategy, Migros implemented various methodological developments to further strengthen data quality, traceability and comparability. These include, in particular, a higher level of granularity in the emission factors used, as well as targeted methodological refinements in data collection. Further information on the data basis and scope can be found directly alongside the targets and in Migros’ GRI Sustainability Report.
CLIMATE AND ENERGY
Migros pursues SBTi climate targets across the entire value chain. As a priority, Migros is driving the methodological development of its calculation basis. This, together with existing data gaps, partly explains why the achievement of some sub-targets is currently not on track. As of this year, the greenhouse gas balance will be published in the PDF sustainability report in accordance with GRI (Global Reporting Initiative).
Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 70.6% by 2030 Compared to 2019
Migros has set itself the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 70.6% by 2030 compared with 2019. The target has been validated by the SBTi. CO₂ emissions are measured in t CO₂e. The scope covers the Migros worldwide.
Note: The target set could not be achieved. In the 2025 reporting year, the calculation method for business units was refined; in addition, the emission factor for electricity increased. At the same time, the planned reductions in heating and refrigerant losses could not be fully realised. Migros continues to implement ongoing technical and operational measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Along the Value Chains (Scope 3) by 90% by 2050 Compared to 2019
The Migros has set itself the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions along its value chains (Scope 3) by 90% by 2050 compared with 2019. CO₂ emissions are measured in t CO₂e. This applies to the entire Migros worldwide.
Note: The sector continues to face the challenge of insufficient data availability. At the same time, the calculation methodology is being continuously refined, which led to significant adjustments in the 2025 footprint assessment. In addition, Migros is consistently implementing climate protection measures throughout its supply chain that, due to current data availability and methodological limitations, cannot yet be fully reflected in the assessment. As the methodology continues to evolve, these measures are expected to be captured more accurately in future assessments.
Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from the Financing of Investment and Mortgage Business Activities (Scope 3, Category 15)
Migros Bank has set specific targets for reducing financed greenhouse gas emissions from its investment and mortgage business activities. The target pathway with the objective of achieving net zero by 2050 has been in effect since 2024.
The climate report is available via the following link: Migros Bank Climate Report.
Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from the Combustion of Transported Fuels (Scope 3, Category 11) by 46.2% by 2030 Compared With 2019
The Migros has set itself the target of reducing emissions generated from the use of the fossil fuels it transports by 46.2% by 2030 compared with 2019.
Note: The scope was adjusted to Migrol, as the target is only applicable to Migrol. Due to the available data basis, the target uses the transported volume rather than the sold volume, as defined under the GHG Protocol. The reduction target for the 2025 reporting year was achieved.
Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (Scope 3, Category 4) by 27.5% by 2030 Compared to 2019
The Migros has set itself the target of reducing emissions from upstream goods transport, including air freight worldwide (Scope 3, Category 4), by 27.5% by 2030 compared with 2019.
Note: The target was not achieved. The calculation methodology was significantly refined in 2025. Implemented measures, such as the electrification of the fleet, will be reflected in the greenhouse gas balance in the coming years.
Reduction of Air Transport Emissions
In addition to the Group’s SBTi commitment, Migros has set itself the target of reducing its air transport emissions by 8,750 t CO₂e by 2025 compared with 2018. The scope includes supermarkets and consumer markets, and food and non-food products. Not included is the Migros online shop and cut flowers.
Note: The target was not achieved. Although air transport emissions from cut flowers as well as from fruit and vegetables were reduced compared with the previous year, emissions from air-freighted lamb and beef increased due to higher volumes.
Reduction of Non-FLAG Greenhouse Gas Emissions (Scope 3, Category 1) by 67% Compared With 2019 Through Reduction Rargets Set by Suppliers
The Migros has set itself the target of ensuring that, by 2026, 67% of non-agricultural emissions (non-FLAG) from purchased products and services are covered by science-based reduction targets set by its suppliers.
In 2025, the Migros continued to implement several measures, including integrating SBTi into supplier discussions and offering webinars for suppliers of subsidiaries. Nevertheless, the target was not achieved. Onboarding suppliers into the strategy is taking more time than planned. Controlling was also revised, and suppliers are now already required to provide evidence of target-setting. The methodological corrections could not be applied retroactively to the base year or to the years 2023 and 2024. As a result, the 2025 values are not comparable with those of previous years.
Support for Suppliers
Migros has set itself the target of supporting its suppliers in implementing SBTi targets and facilitating their access to them. This target has been pursued since 2023.
A key instrument for supporting suppliers is the financial and technical support of concrete projects in our supply chain. In addition, webinars were held to share knowledge and make it easier for suppliers to get started with SBTi-related topics.
BIODIVERSITY
In 2025, Migros published its procurement principle on deforestation- and conversion-free supply chains, including targets.
Responsible Sourcing of Commodities Associated with Deforestation Risk
Migros has set itself the goal of ensuring that, by 2025, 100% of deforestation-critical raw materials used in its own-brand products are covered either by certification with traceability or by sourcing origins that ensure deforestation-free supply chains. The scope includes own-brand products of Migros as well as Migros Industry’s third-party customer business, and covers the raw materials cocoa, coffee, palm (palm oil, palm kernel oil, palm derivatives), soy (food-grade), beef (including feed soy) and wood (including paper and pulp).
Across all raw materials (except wood), Migros achieved 89%. This means that the 100% deforestation-free target was not achieved.
The target for the raw material wood was narrowly not achieved. In 2025, around 96% of the revenue share of all wood-based products in the own-brand assortment was FSC-certified. Migros continues to pursue the target of reaching 100%.
Other Commodities Except Wood
Note: The target was not achieved. The years 2024 and 2025 cannot be compared, as the scope was adjusted in 2025 (beef is now included in the certification target). In addition, Migros identified discrepancies in supplier information.
